Riverview Revive: REMINERALIZING Your Soil for Healthy Plants

Riverview Revive: REMINERALIZING Your Soil for Healthy Plants

Riverview Revive is a premium dry amendment mix designed to remineralize depleted soil and support healthy plant growth. Made from the same high quality organic inputs found in our living soil blends, Revive is both a fertilizer and a microbiology booster, feeding your soil as much as it feeds your plants.

Its analysis is:

N-P-K: 3.2-9.2-4.0 with Calcium: 13.5%

We made sure to load Revive up with high levels of Calcium. As we get into more discussions about specific nutrients and their role within the plant you’ll see why we focus so heavily on making sure there is PLENTY of available Calcium in the soil.

Why Revive Works

Revive works by enhancing the rhizosphere, the zone around plant roots where beneficial soil organisms break down organic materials into forms plants can absorb.

By applying Revive:

  • Plants receive essential nutrients for growth, flowering, and fruiting.
  • Soil microbes are nourished, which increases biological activity.
  • Over time, raw organic inputs are mineralized, creating a sustainable nutrient supply for your garden.

This makes Revive particularly well suited for living soils, where plant health is closely tied to soil biology.

What is Topdressing?

Topdressing is the practice of mixing a layer of dry fertilizer on the soil surface (top couple inches), rather than mixing it into the soil completely. When you topdress with Revive:

  • Nutrients are released slowly over time, as soil biology breaks them down.
  • Plants have continuous access to nutrients with a lower risk of over fertilization.
  • The soil microbiology gets a boost, enhancing nutrient cycling and soil health.

Topdressing is a hands off approach that works well for gardeners who can’t tend to their plants every day, but it requires patience and planning, as nutrients take time to mineralize.Topdressing gives us a large amount of nutrients at once that slowly mineralize. As opposed to our Fuel Series line of water soluble fertilizers which apply more targeted, but smaller, amounts of nutrients more frequently.

How to Topdress with Revive

Step 1: Determine the Amount

  • 0.5 - 1 cup of Revive per 10 gallons of soil is recommended every 10–14 days.
  • Adjust slightly based on plant size and nutrient demand.

Step 2: Support the Microbiology

  • Apply a layer of Riverview Bio-Boost and/or Bio-Base on top of your soil before or after topdressing.
  • Minimum: ½ inch
  • Maximum: Up to 2+ inches (this is honestly hard to overdo with quality inputs)
  • Bio-Boost and Bio-Base keeps the topdress moist and introduces the microbial activity necessary to break down Revive effectively.

Step 3: Lightly Scratch the Surface

  • Gently work Revive and Bio-Boost or Bio-Base into the top layer (1-2”) of soil with your hands or a small rake.
  • Avoid disturbing roots too deeply, as you don’t want to stress the plants.

Step 4: Water

  • Moisture is key for mineralization, so water lightly after application.
  • You can even add a little organic, unsulphered blackstrap molasses into your irrigation water if you’d like. It’s a quick little food source for you microbes to get a jump start. I like to use at 1TBSP per gallon. Don’t apply more than 1x every 2 weeks.

When to Topdress

Knowing when to topdress depends on a combination of plant needs, soil condition, and environmental factors:

  • Plant size: Large plants in smaller pots deplete nutrients faster and may need more frequent topdressing.
  • Soil age: Older soils may require more frequent applications to replenish nutrients.
  • Environmental conditions:
    • Higher light intensity → faster growth → faster nutrient use
    • Higher temperatures and humidity → higher metabolic rate → nutrients are used more quickly
  • Watering & rain: Excessive watering or heavy rain can leach nutrients, making topdressing more necessary.

As a rule of thumb, every 10–14 days is a good starting point. Observe your plants for growth rate, leaf color, and overall vigor to adjust the schedule.

Why This Approach Works

  • Gentle, organic inputs: Revive requires microbial action to become plant available, so it’s forgiving and reduces the risk of over fertilization.
  • Supports soil biology: The majority of nutrient availability comes from the microbes in the soil, not just the fertilizer itself.
  • Hands off strategy: Great for gardeners who want strong, healthy plants without daily intervention.

Think of topdressing with Revive as feeding your soil and your plants at the same time, giving them everything they need while maintaining balance and harmony in your living soil system.

Using Revive to Remineralize Soil at the Start of the Season

At the beginning of the growing season, Revive can be used to recharge your soil and build a strong nutrient foundation. This is different from topdressing: instead of lightly applying nutrients to the surface, you incorporate Revive directly into the soil when you are filling pots, beds, or raised rows. Think of this like filling the fuel tank at the start of the season, you are giving your soil a full reservoir of nutrients that will slowly release as plants grow. Subsequent topdressings throughout the season act like “fuel top-ups”, providing extra support exactly when your plants need it without overwhelming the soil or the roots. By starting with a well remineralized soil, you ensure plants have access to essential nutrients from day one, while the slow release nature of Revive and strong soil biology continue to feed them throughout the season.

Key Takeaways

  1. Revive is a nutrient and microbiology booster, not just a fertilizer.
  2. Topdress every 10–14 days, using 0.5-1 cup per 10 gallons of soil.
  3. Support the process with Bio-Boost or Bio-Base to maintain moisture and biological activity.
  4. Adjust frequency based on plant size, soil condition, environment, and watering habits.
  5. Be patient and plan as nutrients need time to mineralize. Organic amendments work best when soil biology is strong.By following these steps, your plants get continuous nutrient support, your soil stays healthy, and your garden thrives with minimal risk of overfeeding.
